Choosing an Egyptian Cotton Duvet Cover

A duvet cover is a great way to protect your comforter or duvet from dirt and odors. It's easier to wash than the other bedding, so you'll be able to keep everything clean. If your comforter or duvet is filled with a material like down or silk, which don't take water well, you'll definitely want to cover it. However, choosing the best duvet cover can be difficult if you don't know the basics. Here's some information to help you understand how to buy the right duvet cover without a lot of hassle.

Not all fabrics are created equal when it comes to duvet covers. While most duvet covers are made from cotton, the quality and feel of the material can vary greatly. If you're looking for a durable fabric for your duvet cover that won't feel rough or scratchy against your skin, try Egyptian cotton. Not always from Egypt, this cotton has an extra long staple, or fiber length. This makes it softer feeling. This fabric is also sometimes called Pima cotton.

Of course, the name of the fabric isn't all that goes into choosing the right duvet cover. A high thread count indicates a more durable fabric with a better texture. Even Egyptian cotton duvet covers won't seem their best at a low thread count, such as 250-300. Look for items that feature a thread count of at least 400. Some duvet covers feature extremely fine threads, with thread counts around 1200 per inch, but they can be prohibitively expensive, and are intended for the luxury market.

In addition to thread count, look at the quality of the Egyptian cotton used in your duvet cover. Threads made from Egyptian cotton can still come in a number of different fiber lengths and grades. Staple lengths of one inch or more are desirable. Two inch lengths exist, but tend to be expensive and hard to find.

Generally, if you see a very inexpensive duvet cover marked as being made from Egyptian cotton, it's made of a lower grade fiber, and will not last as long, or feel as good, as one made from higher quality cotton. Single ply threads are a good indication of long fiber length, as multi-ply yarns are normally composed of shorter staple cotton. Avoid cotton blends, as they are likely to be made with lower quality fibers. All cotton duvet covers will provide better insulation and breathability than those which contain some polyester or other synthetic materials.

The right basic knowledge will help you find the right Egyptian cotton duvet cover. While inexpensive varieties may be tempting, remember that they won't last as long. You can often save money on your duvet cover by purchasing a slightly higher-end product in the first place. Remember to read the packaging carefully, and examine the duvet cover if you can, to make sure you're getting a great product that will last a long time.
