How To Make a Duvet Cover

Duvet covers are a smart choice if you want to protect your comforter from dirt and dust, and a must if you have a feather duvet or comforter, or one made of silk. A duvet cover is a wonderful choice if you want to change the look of your room a little. You could buy a duvet cover in a regular store – there are a dizzying number of different types and styles, at various prices. However, purchased duvet covers can be quite expensive. If you're a little bit handy, or willing to learn to sew, you can make a duvet cover that will serve just as well, but won't cost you as much. Here's how to make a great duvet cover for your bed.

A duvet cover can be made from two lengths of fabric 54" wide or wider, or you can use an appropriately sized set of sheets in the color and pattern you'd like. Make sure you use a fabric that feels comfortable against your skin as well as looking nice. High quality cottons and other soft, natural fabrics are a good choice. Make sure that each panel of your duvet cover is as long as the length of your duvet, plus an extra five or six inches. This will allow enough room for seams, and the height of the duvet. Be sure to take care when laying out prints and other patterns. Matching your print will make your duvet cover look a lot more professional, even if it takes a little more fabric. Also, be sure you prewash your fabric in hot water, so that you remove any treatments and allow it to shrink if it's going to do so. You don't want to make your cover, wash it, and then find that it no longer fits!

If you're using sheets, you can skip right to pinning the sides and bottom of your duvet cover. If you're using fabric panels, you'll need to cut them to half the width of your duvet (plus an inch or so on each side). Then, sew the front two panels, then the back two panels, together to produce a front panel and a back panel. They can then be pinned on three sides, just like wider fabrics. Go slowly, and make sure you measure multiple times before cutting, to get the right size.

When you sew your seams, go over them twice. This will prevent them from coming undone in the laundry. Also, watch for pins, so you won't break your machine needle. Make sure you don't sew the open side of the duvet cover shut – you'll need it open to put the duvet inside. For this end, turn the fabric back toward you, making a deep hem, like you'd expect to see on the top of a sheet (if you used sheets, you can skip this part, but should measure your initial fabric length shorter to accommodate). If you want, you can leave this part open, or use snaps, snap tape, or buttons and buttonholes to fasten the end. Once you've turned the duvet cover right side out, it's ready to use!
